The Webb Family Tree
By Trevor Locke
My mother Doris Alice was the daughter of Herbert Arthur Webb, born 1864.
Herbert Arthur was the son of George Webb, born 1818.
George was the son of Francis Webb who was born in 1786. Francis married Charlotte Wolfe, who was herself born in 1787, at Reading.
Webbs that are in these four generations include: Alice (born 1863), Athelstan (born 1849), Charlotte (born 1821), Dardanus (born 1847), Doris Alice (born 1909), Edith (born 1893), Elizabeth (born 1827), Ellen Maud (born 1902), Frederick Arthur (born 1894), George (born 1816), George (b 1818), George Robert (born 1908), Herbert Arthur (born 1864), Herbert Reginald (born 1905), Jane (born 1822), John (born 1831), Lionel (born 1847), Reginald Walter (born 1854), Sidney Algernon Jnr, (born 1886), Sidney Algernon Snr (born 1856), Violet May (born 1904) and William (born 1829.)
The above photo is thought to show Herbert Reginald Webb, known as ‘Bert’ on the far left. If this is correct, the lady next him is probably his wife, Ella Edith Webb (nee Illsley) who was born in 1912. Having said that, I could be wrong.
Below is a photo of Bert which is far more certain
Bert is on the left at the back, next to Doris and Leslie Locke. The children are probably Bert’s daughter and son – Sandra and Geoffrey standing next to Peter Locke who is on the right. The photo was taken in the garden of the Locke house at Tangier Road, Copnor, Portsmouth.
Herbert Reginald Webb (Bert) died in London in 1977.
As Geoffrey was born in the same year that I was, I would guess that photo was taken in around 1955.
There is some doubt that the girl in the photo is called Sandra. A note that I have says that she died at age two. It is possible therefore that the girl is a later daughter of Bert’s whose name is not yet known or even another relative. None of these old photos were ever annotated or captioned. Let alone, dated.
Bert and Ella Edith (nee Illsley) married in 1932 in Harlesden, Middlesex. At that time, they were living in the house in Rostrevor Road in Fulham were Doris Webb also lived. In 1945, Bert was living in Southall where he worked as a foreman woodworker. I was told that Bert and Leslie served together in the Royal Navy on the same ship.
Bert and Ella had two children – Sandra Ann and Geoffrey Kevin
The gentleman on the right in the cap might be Arthur Henry Illsley, Ella’s father. The original photo is not dated and no information was given with it.
